Pool heaters come in all shapes and sizes and each has its own unique twist. We will go over how each one works, what are some of the benefits of using a specific type, and lastly how much on average they cost.
Solar Pool Heaters
A great heater to use that is environmentally friendly is the solar pool heater. It utilizes solar panels to harness the heat from the sun and heat your pool. It works similar to solar pool covers, however, you can actually control the temperature of your pool with solar pool heaters.
The way it works is by filtering pool water through its internal heating system. It can also cool down water if you live in a hotter climate area. it takes a long time to get to that perfect swimming pool temperature.
We suggest using cheaper means because solar pool heaters can cost around $4000 to $7000. Luckily, they do not require much operating cost. They also can last up to 20 years meaning you will only ever need to buy one for the most part. Solar pool heaters do not require much maintenance either. Depending on where you purchase one, you can expect to have a long warranty in the case of anything happening to your heater.
Gas Pool Heaters
One of the fastest ways to heat your water, gas pool heaters use natural gas to heat your pool. They are quite large and are only really useful for quick heating.
Gas heaters are cheap to buy but costly to operate. They are also not very good for the environment as it burns fuel to heat similar to how your car works.
Unlike solar pool heaters, gas heaters require a little more maintenance. The extreme temperatures that these heaters work under can cause issues down the line, but you can expect them to last at least 5 years. Warranties are usually done on a parts basis with gas heaters.
Heat Pump Pool Heaters
Heat pumps only transfer heat, they do not know generate it. They are eco-friendly and very energy efficient. In the long term, using a heat pump will save you money. It is really a heater that is used for maintaining heat.
There are two types of heat pumps, air source and water source. Each does what their name implies, air source transfers heat from the air while water source transfer from the water.
If you get a high-quality heat pump pool heater, you can expect it to last longer than 10 years. At the least, these heaters will last 5 years. These types of heaters are the highest maintenance heaters on our list. They work hard to transfer heat. Also, because of the complexity of the machine, a certified technician is required to look over and maintain these heaters.

Electric Resistance Heaters
Just as the name implies, electric resistance heaters use electricity to create heat. It is composed of a resistor that reacts to currents. When a current hits it, water will wash over it and cause the heater to heat. Electric resistance heaters require a large amount of electricity to work. They are usually only used to heat smaller bodies of water such as hot tubs.
